ALGIERS, La. — New Orleans police said they shot an armed man in the leg Saturday evening during a confrontation with two men in Algiers.
The wounded man, who police say brandished an assault rifle at officers, was found in the 1000 block of Wagner Street, just south of Newton Street. He was treated at a hospital.
Police then began a search for the second man, surrounding the block bounded by Newton, Wagner, Diana Street and L.B. Landry Avenue.
A large force of police, including officers with dogs and a SWAT team, was called in to conduct the search, which lasted a couple of hours. The second man was not found.
Police Superintendent Warren Riley and Deputy Chief Anthony Cannatella were at the scene.
Police said the confrontation occurred when they encountered two men in a stolen Toyota Highlander, including one possibly wanted on murder charges, police spokeswoman Sabrina Richardson said.
The two men fled in the vehicle, and the man brandishing an assault rifle was shot about 7:15 p.m. after pointing it at officers, Richardson said.
