By Maria Papadopoulos, Enterprise staff writer BROCKTON — Two city police officers shot a 25-year-old man who began firing gunshots into a crowded parking lot outside Progressions nightclub on Montello Street at closing time early Sunday morning, police said.
Daniel Griffin, a former Brockton resident with a last known address in Plymouth, was taken to a Boston hospital with significant injuries but is expected to survive, Police Chief William Conlon said.
“He was approaching the crowd and he was firing,” Conlon said. “He was definitely armed, shooting and refused to comply with the (police) commands to drop the weapon.”
No other injuries were reported in Sunday's shooting. Griffin was in surgical intensive care with multiple gunshot wounds at a Boston hospital Sunday afternoon, police said. Details of his injuries could not be learned Sunday.
Officers Michael Darrah and William Carpenter were working a paid detail at Progressions and trying to move patrons along just after 2 a.m. Sunday when someone told the officers to go outside to the rear of the building where a fight had broken out, Conlon said.
The uniformed officers heard gunshots and then saw Griffin exchanging gunfire with an unknown person into the crowd, police said.
Griffin, who is known to police, was running on Franklin Street back toward the nightclub and shooting into the crowd, when officers ordered him to drop his weapon several times, but he did not, police said.
Griffin “had the gun, he was pointing right at them with it and didn't drop it,” Conlon said. “They were confronted by him up close and they told him to drop the weapon and he didn't so they fired at him.”

By MIKE UNDERWOOD The Enterprise BROCKTON - A Plymouth man has undergone emergency surgery after being shot multiple times by police on Sunday following an early morning gunfight outside a city nightspot.
Horrified club-goers watched as Daniel Griffin, 25, was shot several times by Brockton police officers after he allegedly fired a gun into a crowded parking lot outside Progressions nightclub on Montello Street early Sunday morning.
‘‘He was shot in the backside, the groin, the arm, and his finger was shot off,’’ Griffin’s sister, Selina Griffin, said.
Griffin, a former Brockton resident who now lives on Shaw Drive in Plymouth, was rushed to the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was transferred to Boston Medical Center hours later.
He underwent surgery for serious injuries Sunday and was reported in a stable condition last night. His sister said he was to be arraigned at his bedside today and will undergo more surgery tomorrow.
‘‘I don’t know what happened. I got a phone call initially saying he was dead, then I went to the scene and the police said he was at the hospital and was still alive,’’ she said. ‘‘It is putting a lot of stress on the family.’’
No other injuries were reported.
The incident occurred shortly after Progressions closed at 2 a.m. Sunday.
Uniformed officers Michael Darrah and William Carpenter were working a paid detail at the club when they were told about a fight at the rear of the club.
They heard gunshots and saw Griffin exchanging gunfire with an unknown person in the crowd, police said.
Officers ordered him to drop his weapon.
The police officers then opened fire on Griffin.
It was the third time in less than a year that officers fired their weapons outside a city bar after closing.
