Mesa police officer shot and killed a man with an outstanding federal warrant late Saturday after the man began shooting at another officer during a routine traffic stop in southeast Mesa.

The man, 50-year-old Dale Nelson Crismon, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle in which Crismon was a passenger is not a suspect in the shooting, police said.

The incident began shortly about 11 p.m. when a Mesa police officer pulled the vehicle over near a convenience store at the northwest corner of Sossaman Road and Southern Avenue for a broken license plate light. The officer, who police did not name, discovered that the vehicle's registration was suspended because the driver didn't have mandatory insurance for the car.

The officer then called for police backup after determining that Crismon had an outstanding federal warrant for his arrest, said Mesa police spokeswoman Holly Hosac.

The first officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle to speak to the occupants and noticed that Crismon was hiding his right hand between his seat and the car door. The officer immediately ordered Crismon to show his hands, and began moving away from the car as Crismon began firing multiple shots from a black handgun.

The officer took cover by a nearby van. The second officer arrived at the scene, drew her gun and shot and killed Crismon. Mesa Fire paramedics pronounced Crismon dead at the scene.

"The interesting thing is that it happened so fast that the occupants of the vehicle didn't realize (the second officer) had pulled up," Hosac said, adding she didn't know whether the first officer realized his backup had arrived, too.

Meanwhile, the first officer's wife, who works in the Mesa Police communications department, heard the scene unfold on police radios.

Officers rushed her to the scene for a joyful reunion with her husband, who suffered only minor injuries, Hosac said.

"I don't think she could her arms around him fast enough," Hosac said. "She was obviously very worried arriving at the scene."

Both officers are on paid administrative leave for three days while the department conducts an internal investigation, as is customary.

Hosac said she wasn't sure how long the two officers have been with the Mesa Police Department but estimated both have been there fewer than seven years, based on their identification numbers with the force.
