San Francisco police are warning of a scam in which suspects show off a beetle kept in water to prove that a victim has cancer and then offer a cure in exchange for money. On Tuesday, police said, a 73-year-old woman was approached in Chinatown by an Asian woman, in her 40s, who asked her where she could find a hair salon. At that point, a man approached and the female suspect asked whether either the victim or the man knew about a cure for cancer. The woman then pulled out a bottle containing water and a live beetle. She dropped the beetle in the water and stirred the water until it turned black, telling the victim that indicated the 73-year-old had cancer. She stirred the water more and it became clear, telling the victim that it was a sign that her cancer could be cured. The woman asked the victim for $100,000 in good faith money to heal her. The victim walked to the suspects' car, and they drove her to the bank. When she was unable to take out $100,000 at one bank, they drove her to another bank, where she took out $2,000.
