A Greenville police officer was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Greene Street on Saturday afternoon.
Jason Campbell, 35, an on-duty officer with the Greenville Police Department, was killed in the collision, which occurred about 1:05 p.m. in front of the Wilco-Hess Store on Greene Street just across the Tar River north of downtown.
The driver of a Jeep pickup truck, Billy Ray Greene, 51, of 827 Dusty Lane, was listed in critical condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, according to hospital officials Saturday night.
Officer Nathan LaCompte, a passenger in the patrol car with Campbell, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Police Chief William Anderson said during a news conference held shortly after 6 p.m.
Campbell is the first Greenville police officer to be killed in the line of duty since 1952.
The preliminary investigation indicates the officers were responding to a report of suspicious activity when the accident occurred, Anderson said.
The patrol car was traveling north and the pickup was traveling south when the vehicles collided, he said.
Anderson said the accident investigation will be handled by the State Highway Patrol.
Trooper Ernie Coleman said that it will take nearly a week for the reconstruction team to conclude its investigation.
Campbell served five years with the Pitt County Sheriff's Office before joining the Greenville Police Department almost five years ago.
He is survived by his wife, a stepson and a three-year-old daughter. Memorial services have not been arranged.
"It is difficult to express the sadness and feeling of loss I share with the mayor, City Council members, city manager, members of the Greenville Police Department and others concerning the loss ... today," Anderson said.
"A chief of police never wants to be in the position of having to announce the untimely death of one of our officers. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the members of all three families today."
Officer J.L. Nobles was killed in 1926 in a motorcycle accident while en route to the scene of a car wreck. Jessie Mills was shot twice in the chest behind New Deal Cleaners on Dickinson Avenue in 1952 when he surprised robbers. David Nichols suffered a heart attack while on duty in August 2003.
