A few members of the Massachusetts State Police Department will be lacing up their running sneakers to take part in the 111th Boston Marathon Monday.
Two retired state policemen and four state police employees will team up with 50 military personnel to run the 26.2 mile race. Some of the soldiers running on Monday will be deployed to Iraq shortly after the marathon.
Troopers will also honor the life of a fellow trooper -- and runner -- who was killed in the line of duty in 1994. A banner will be hanging above the runners around the 25.5 mile mark in memory of Trooper Mark Charbonnier. The City of Boston has issued a “conditional permit” which will allow the banner to hang 15 minutes after the first runner passes underneath.
Troopers from New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Maine will also be running alongside the Massachusetts State Police on Monday.
In all, 275 Troopers from the Bay State have run in one or more marathons.
