Hey, possibly will be trying out for a job as a Sheriff. Can anyone give me some pros/cons of the job? I really don't know much about what they do. What can I expect to be doing? I see not too many people are big fans of this department. Also information on the pay would be helpful. Thanks

You will be a corrections officer unless you are lucky enough to get transportation.

that pretty much sums it up.

pay and benefits are decent.

the hours are bad. expect to work 3-11 with wens-thur off and work most holidays.

the officers are good guys. respond to all the calls , don't be a rat and you should do fine

if you get deputized you can work details for Chelsea , Boston and the Mass. Pike.

other guys pass on the details and take the overtime inside the jail.

it's good for building your retirement. you can also take your time with you if your lucky enough to get the PD or Fire

Good Luck

Good luck with your "try out" =)

Posted by: kidiaz

the job is good. great pay if you are single and good benefits.

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

Wolf what stage of the process are you in. I think the academy starts May 7th.
Starting base pay is around $700

Posted by: wolf9848

Not very far, a guy who has made it a career heard about my stints in the Army, Iraq, and so I was told I should put in an application, did that, waiting next for an Interview.

Posted by: AdamJ1984

So wolf, you didn't have to take the written and physical agility tests? Or you did and now are awaiting an interview?

Posted by: mikehammer

Pahapoika summed it up perfectly. Expect to work 3-11 w/ either tues/weds or weds/thurs off. Benefits and pay aren't bad and OT usually picks up in the summer. Any questions feel free to Pm me ...

Posted by: kidiaz

its true tue/wed or wed/thur off on 3-11 great guys on that shift. feel free to pm me i'll tell you all about it. i'm one of those 3-11 guys...

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

Good luck to all the recruits in the new academy you will need it. Iam sure you found out day one they have big egos. Just keep your mouth shut and stick together and dont give up.

Once online 3/4 of the class that made it will eitheir leave or be terminated because of the poor adminastration that runs the show at the dept. It wouldnt be a bad dept to work for but from what i hear is that politics within makes the job not worth it and

Ok, been told I'll be taking the upcomming written exam, what should I expect to see on it? Is it anything like the police exam? How soon should I expect to take the PT test, interview, and actually get into the Academy if all goes well? Also, can I expect them to show up to my place for part of the background check? When does the next academy start?

Posted by: AdamJ1984

From what they told me, there is no set schedule for the next test because the current Academy has started. They did state that when the next test was given that they would send me a letter.

Posted by: wolf9848

I received a letter, and have already talked to HR. There is an upcomming test soon which I'll be taking.

Posted by: AdamJ1984

Cool, I will see what's up as well, I know they have offered multiple tests in the past compared to Middlesex and Essex counties.

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

To those guys looking to get on SC, I would steer far away from them as you can. They have multple tests because so many officers are leaving or getting fired. The admin. over there sux and the inmates have more power and rights than the officers.

They have classes of 50 officers go in every couple of months and fail more than half of them before the 12 weeks is over. I heard from a bunch of guys that 1 recruit was in his last week of the academy and they gave him the pink slip because he was tall over 6' 3'' and had trouble doing a hold down. Sounds like a real nice place to work for!!

I would try Middlesex or Campus police before trying SCSD or wait until this admin is gone. If you need info on Middlesex let me know

Just my 2 cents

funny 6'3" had trouble doing a high hold down. maybe he dropped his handcuff key in the parking lot. lied about it and said he forgot it at home. after everyone saw him with it in the beginning of the day. he got fired for lying on his report. thats a big no no! 40 recruits last class 35 made it some quit cause they could not run a single mile. failed multiple test. could not shoot strait. in the last 2yrs around 150 officers graduated the academy. most are still their. some have gone to local pd's. the adm. is good. its the lazy officers that makes them look bad. inmates dont have more power or rights than officers. if you do your job the way its suppose to be done then you have no problem. officers get fired for doing the wrong stuff ie: bringing drugs to inmates calling in sick way to many times or just being plain lazy. that jeopordizes every officers life around them.

WTF is a "high hold down?"

Posted by: wolf9848

Can anyone help out with the question I posted above?

Posted by: pahapoika

WTF is a "high hold down?"

beats me , but apparently tough to do when your 6'3

Posted by: AdamJ1984

CodeBlue, my ultimate goal in LE is to become a PO, I have tried many universities and colleges, and it's just as difficult as a CC position. I know UMass Lowell is currently looking for applicants and have contacted them several times on the hiring status yet still get no response. As far a Middlesex goes, they just had their test and PT test so it will be at least a year I would think before they have another. In the mean time if Suffolk holds a test I will take it along with numerous police agencies in NH.

A high hold down inst that difficult to do, but however if you cannnot do one then it jepordizes your abiliity to correctly perform you job properly and also doing it improperly can seriously injure someone cause a huge lawsuit. However that recruit was asked to come back. Dont know where the handcuff key thing came from. And it was 29 recruits to start and 21 graduated. And whoever graduated deserved it and whoever didnt....well i will leave it at that. There academy is tough and you do learn alot but you still need to work hard.

A high hold down is when a inmate/perpetrator is on the ground, and you grab the armextend it straight out and then bring it straight up and down verticallyplace your knee on their shoulder blade and their wrist in a wrist lock applying pressure to gain compliance when needed. IT is a very useful and effective way to gain control of someone. What makes it somewhat difficutl is that ifyou are not in shape you need to be in a squating position for an extended period of time and some people just cant do it. Maybe that helps, it is a rough idea of what it is. It is much easier to explain when you have someone to demonstrate it on.

Hey, I just took the Exams for the department today, any idea on how long it could take to find out how I did? Plus how long of a time period can I expect to take the PT test, Interview, and actually get into the academy? When does the next class start for the academy?

Posted by: AdamJ1984

Really Wolf, were you the only one because I am always in contant with the department both by Email and phone and they had said nothing of a test. I know an academy just started and I don't know how many they run during the year. I think I will contact them now and see what's up. I really want/need a job and this looks like a good opportunity for me.

There was about 17 of us who took the test today. Before we took the test, a LT. gave us a tour of the Prison complex. We went into the areas where all the inmates are in the open, kinda funny since the prisoners are yelling and swearing at you. Also went into the jail cells. The LT. answered any questions we had. After the tour, we took the test.
