BOSTON — Just shy of 18 months after he eluded federal agents seeking to charge him with importing 10 kilograms of cocaine into New Bedford, law enforcement had its first confirmed sighting of Brandin Gonsalves, the alleged leader of the Ruth Street gang. Mr. Gonsalves, 27, formerly of 468 Rivet St., had been on the run since November 2005, when he and 20 other men were charged in a federal grand jury indictment as dealers in the area drug market. Senior Inspector James Ergas of the U.S. Marshals said a string of tips and detective work led him to Lithonia, Ga., a tiny city about 18 miles east of Atlanta. There he spotted Mr. Gonsalves getting out of a white Acura and entering the home of a friend at about 10:30 p.m. on March 21. “We had never positively identified him before,” Mr. Ergas said. He and the Marshals’ Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force team, which handles violent suspects, worked out a careful operational plan for taking Mr. Gonsalves down. Not only was their target the alleged former New Bedford gang leader, he also had reported ties to national crime organizations. “He was a significant player in the drug market and a known member of the Gangster Disciples,” Mr. Ergas said. The Gangster Disciples are a Chicago gang that has grown into a group with ties across the country, known for drug trafficking and a heavy presence in the South.
