Boston Police Upping Age Limit????

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

I saw this in the Herald yesterday. Are the BPD/City gonna raise the age limit for original appointments?? Anyone know if there is support for this???

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRe...ticleid=194051

"This morning, the Boston City Council is expected to vote to increase the maximum age for new recruits to enter the BPD ranks to 40 - a measure that was introduced by City Councilor Michael Flaherty. "

I guess the Globe ran a story too.......

Mayor presses for older police recruits

April 11, 2007
Mayor Thomas M. Menino filed legislation yesterday that would increase the age restriction for police recruits from 32 to 36 as a way to broaden the pool of potential applicants for the next class of police officers. The legislation, which goes before the City Council today, would need approval from the Legislature. Councilor Michael F. Flaherty had filed similar legislation and led hearings on the issue this week. The number of applicants has fallen in recent years, and in February, the Police Department launched a $100,000 recruiting campaign. The next police test will be administered next month.

Great, now a larger pool of unqualified minorities can apply.

Must be tough talking with that white sheet over his face. Burn any crosses lately? For somebody who was recently in the running for the BPD job, this is not the brightest thing to say or type in an open forum. EVERYBODY reads this now, not just the whackers, reprobates and degenerates, like me.

...being a minority, I thought it would be OK if it came from me.

Anyhow, believe me (or not) when I tell you I am not a biggot but the process does make one very sour.

I read some of the posts in different topics in regards to minorities and its amazing the bigotry that exists. Not that I should be suprised.

Don't confuse bigotry with frustration.

Old guys can apply too? WooHoo!

But you are a minority and got preference on the test. Did you make it, or did you not score high enough even for a minority to get on, or was your BOP an obstacle?
You do need a 70 to pass you know.

BOSTON-With crime increasing at a frightening rate, Mayor Thomas Menino has increased the age limit for police recruits. This group is the first class since the age limit was changed. They represent a wide range of experiences including blue ribbon needlepoint winners and shuffleboard champions. There were however some changes that had to be made since the age limit was raised. Cruisers were equipped with handicapped placards, and duty belts have holsters for collapsible canes. The new recruits retined their own union, AARP, to negotiate with the city to add in nap time and meals of wheels during patrol.

Too funny!

I scored extremely well and have a spotless background in every sense of the word. Anyhow, it is tough to have a meaningful and productive
dialogue about this subject when you don't know who your dealing with on the other side as we all (including me) tend to assume things and jump to quick conclusions.

Funny post trooper, didn't know you guys had a sense of humor.
When is it your turn to give into the age thing?

Posted by: alphadog1

You can be a MSP trooper for life. No retirement. Work till you drop!

Posted by: stubrie

If no-one is forced out, why is there an entry age restriction?

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

I think it is 35 because they used to push you out at 55, so you would get a 20 year pension which was the minimum.

Posted by: alphadog1

I believe the MSP lost a court decision pertaining to the 55 YOA restriction after the merger. The merged agencies had 65 YOA restriction (civil service law).

So anyone know if this passed? Did Boston up the age?

Posted by: coldsteel

Lets cut the crap huh..... If Boston needs cops that bad why not just give control of the Boston Police to the gang members hell who knows maybe some of them are taking the exam May 19 anyway. Or here's a better idea, why not swear in every geriatric within the city limits there that kills two birds with one stone. Just my 2 cents

I’m appealing the age limit for another town, and the word was that Boston Police had change the age limit to 40 starting on the 2007 exam. Let’s wait and see.
