Reported stabbing death has officials puzzled

The location of a reported stabbing death had Massachusetts and Rhode Island authorities baffled Wednesday over who had jurisdiction of the case.

Fall River police said the scene of the stabbing was on Hancock Street, where the north side of the road is in Fall River and the south side is in Tiverton RI.

No details of the incident were available from any agency.

Although the incident reportedly occurred sometime Tuesday night or early Wednesday, Fall River police said Wednesday night that jurisdiction was still unknown.

"That's still undetermined," said Detective Sgt. Armand Ouellette of the Major Crimes Division about 8:45 p.m.

He declined to say anything more about the case.

Fall River Police Sgt. Ronald Furtado said late Wednesday afternoon that he could not release any information about the incident because it had not yet been determined in which community it happened.

"We have reason to believe the incident occurred in Tiverton," Furtado said.

If that were the case, any information would be coming from Tiverton police and/or Rhode Island State Police, he said.

If the incident is deemed to have happened in Fall River, then Fall River police, and state police, assigned to Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter's office, would handle the case.

Men Arraigned In Stabbing Death

Stephen Barreto

Two men were arraigned Thursday in connection with the stabbing death of a third man in Fall River.
NBC 10 News reported that William Dupras, 35, was killed Wednesday when an apparent drug deal went bad.
Stephen Barreto was charged with one count of murder, but prosecutors said Barreto was attacked by Dupras.
"It appears that the stabbing occurred during an attempted robbery and assault on Mr. Barreto by Mr. Dupras and two other males," prosecutor Cynthia Bracket said.
Lawyers on both sides agreed Barreto had made an arrangement to buy drugs. But Barreto's attorney claims her client -- a tattoo artist -- didn't start the violence.
Joan Fund argued that Barreto was supposed to meet one man, but instead wound up in a car with three -- fearing for his safety.
"The car stops. He gets out of the car, and that is when he is attacked," Fund said. "He is attacked. He is choked. He is thrown to the ground. While he is being held down, he is being kicked repeatedly. He is being beaten. He hears something fall to the ground. He basically grabs it blindly because he is in fear for his life and he swings."
Fund said the object was a knife, which struck Dupras in the side.
Also in court Thursday was Michael Sama, who is accused of joining Dupras in beating Barreto.
"Kicked him numerous times as he was being choked," prosecutor Pete Costanza said.
But Sama's lawyer, Lonn Greenberg, said his client was just along for the ride and that Sama was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"At most, all he thought was going to happen was Mr. Barreto was going to have to pay back a debt he owed to Mr. Dupras. That was it," Greenberg said. "At no time did my client exit the vehicle."
Barreto's bail was set at $250,000. Sama's bail was set at $10,000.
