(West Haven CT- WTNH) _ A popular football coach at West Haven High School was arrested today. Police charged Edward McCarthy and four other people with participating in an illegal book making operation. McCarthy, 60, who is also a teacher at the high school is charged with professional gambling, possession of gambling records, and using a telephone to transmit and receive gambling information. State police from the organized crime unit raided McCarthy's home in January and also seized items from The Dugout sports bar, which is also run by McCarthy. "It has been a long investigation," said Lt. Paul Vance, State Police. "It took many man hours there were many different investigative techniques that were utilized during this investigation." Today, state police executed the arrest warrants in this case. McCarthy as well as Pasquale Demaio, 67, of North Haven, Paul Bowen, 50, of West Haven, Bernard McDermott, 48, West Haven and Angela Consorte, 48, of West Haven face charges. All five of the accused surrendered at Troop I in Bethany where they were placed under arrest.
