(WBZ)BOSTON Boston police were out in full force at Fenway Park on Monday -- both in uniform and undercover. They were making the rounds all around the ballpark and Kenmore Square going after scalpers. All in all, it was a good day for the cops and the Sox, and a bad day for the guys making the illegal sales.
One man is cuffed and put away, another runs from police -- it's all part of the crackdown on scalpers at Fenway. "We're chasing, we're out there," said Boston Police Captain Williams Evans. "We have more presence, but we also have a lot more undercover officers and we're gonna do that all year."
WBZ cameras catch several transactions in Kenmore Square as undercover cops make illegal buys. Opening Day is a day where the demand is greater than the supply. Some fans are looking for any admission into the park they can find.
"They ended up being $12 face value ticket for approximately 400 bucks."
Mike Beaton and his buddy Tim paid 17-times the face value on eBay, where WBZ saw two tickets going for $4,000. "I don't care," said Mike. "We're in Fenway on Opening Day."
"There is no value," said Tim. "It's Opening Day -- never been before -- great thing."
"Lot of people don't realize that some of these tickets their buying are fake tickets too, and they're going up to the turnstiles and not getting admittance because they've been sold phony tickets," said Evans.
As of 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, seven people were under arrest and face $500 fines.
WBZ's Kathy Curran spoke with one scalper who said the day was so hectic because of all the police presence, he ended up going home with a lot of unsold tickets.
What a joke. Somehow it's OK for ticket agencies to charge $500 for ticket, but they organize a sting to round-up a few morons at Fenway.
