Mayor presses for older police recruits

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Mayor Thomas M. Menino filed legislation yesterday that would increase the age restriction for police recruits from 32 to 36 as a way to broaden the pool of potential applicants for the next class of police officers. The legislation, which goes before the City Council today, would need approval from the Legislature. Councilor Michael F. Flaherty had filed similar legislation and led hearings on the issue this week. The number of applicants has fallen in recent years, and in February, the Police Department launched a $100,000 recruiting campaign. The next police test will be administered next month.

He could increase the age to 70 and then they could hire senior citizens as police "greeters".

When is he gonna learn that people can't afford to live in Boston and he needs to drop the residency requirement. He can make it so you must live within a certain mile radius of Boston and that would at least make his pool applicant numbers go up some. I called with questions a few months back about the residency requirement and asked if Charlestown qualified as meeting the guidlines, since they are patrolled by BPD. I was told no, it does not. It's ridiculous, Mumbles is a moron!

Agreed. It's as simple as that. Getting rid of residency=More and better applicants.

You've obviously taked to one of the finer officers they have manning the phones since they don't know the geographical boundries of the city in which they patrol. Laughable, but yet sad at the same time......

Hell just make it a "state resident" restriction

He's not the only moron since it never occurred to you that if Charlestown is patrolled by BPD, then it must BE A PART OF BOSTON. Maybe the person you spoke to misunderstood you because of a slur in your speech and thought you said "Charlton" (which would not be considered a Boston community, no). You won't see any Worcester cops patrolling Revere or Somerville cops patrolling Dedham... do you get it now?

menino's a dick ! he changed the age requirement on the test a few years back after we all singed up and paid our money.

took the test anyways but never heard anything from the city.

old tommy boy doesn't have a clue.

Dungeon, I know that. The person who ansewred the phone that day apparently did not, that was my point! We were debating about what is being said in here now, that the requirement is stupid and limits the amount of good qualified candidates or applicant pool. I just called Human Resources @ 617-635-3370. The woman I just talked to said Charlestown DOES meet the residency requirement, which is what I thought. There was someone however in the background who was saying it did not and the two were having a disagreement right there on the phone. I was just stating what I heard myself brother and not what someone told me or what I thought I already knew. If they're debating the residency requirements amongst themselves, what does that tell you? It tells me the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing and Mumbles Menino is still a moron running the entire show. Sorry if I offended you bro!

Just like Barnstable PD doesn't patrol Hyannis.

Shitstorm brewin'

I'd give the same answer if someone called me up and asked such a moronic question.

But then again, Dorchester PD does not have a residency requirement.

I think its a good idea to raise the age. I work with guys at the jail that are fourty years old and they are in unbelievable shape. Some of them are real ass kickers to. Randy Catore is a 46 year old U.F.C champ. I'm still in my twenties and half the guys I work with that are in thier fourties have come through huge when shit goes down.

I am waiting for the groundswell of support for the City of Mandella to be incorporated by vocal community activists again. Anybody remember Sadiki Kambon driving that beat-up blue C/V with "Mandella Police" on the doors? I wonder if they would hire qualified candidates like me!!

how about Reedville PD ? . tuck tommy in at night and patrol all 4 blocks

Older coppers? Finally!

Sorry.....Sis

I'd give the same answer if someone called me up and asked such a moronic question.

I didn't call to ask that question. After we talked for a few, it was obvious this person wasn't too bright, so I asked her the question sarcastically. The person on the other end said only if you live in Boston and Boston only, so I said, "well what about Charlstown, does that meet the requirement even though it's a different town, but patrolled by BPD" and to my amazement, the woman said "No, it does not". I told her she'd better get her facts straight before she tells that to anyone else. I was just sharing that story to show how clueless they are. Even today they were arguing with each other, it was comical. Jeepers!
