HINGHAM - Boat bandits are leaving some local water sports enthusiasts high and dry.

Police in five South Shore towns are looking into the thefts of a half-dozen kayaks and one canoe, many of them from the owners’ back yards.

The Hingham Police Department got a call about a stolen kayak yesterday afternoon. It was the second such report in Hingham in four days.

In both cases, one on Bradley Park Drive and the other on Jones Street, the boats were lifted from the owners’ yards, and the boats were not described as being in plain view.

In Hanover, a kayak valued at about $750 was taken from a residence on April 3. In Cohasset, three kayaks were taken from residents’ yards between April 1 and April 3.

In Norwell, police reported that a 17-foot Mad River canoe, worth an estimated $300, was stolen from a home on Brigantine Circle on April 5. The canoe was sitting atop two sawhorses in the yard, which is adjacent to the North River.

Officer Ronald Fries said the homeowner did not see or hear anything during the night of the theft.

‘‘They just walked in and more than likely walked off and dragged it into the river,’’ Fries said.
