NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A Bloomfield man who has confessed to five armed robberies that netted about $2.5 million worth of jewelry pleaded guilty to two federal charges Monday in connection with one of the incidents, federal prosecutors said.
Jerry Kenyatta Carter, 36, faces seven years to life in prison and a fine of up to $5 million when he is sentenced June 26.
The U.S. attorney's office said Carter robbed five jewelry stores in Enfield, Manchester, Orange, Westport and Hartford between April 2004 and May 2006.
He pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in New Haven on Monday to one count of interfering with interstate commerce by threats of violence and one count of using and carrying a firearm in connection with a crime of violence for the Enfield robbery.
Prosecutors said Carter robbed the Gem Jewelry store in Enfield on Oct. 23, 2005, and took about $600,000 worth of jewelry from the store after handcuffing two employees and two customers to a railing in a bathroom.
Carter also admitted to robbing Hannoush Jewelers in Manchester on April 9, 2004, Michaels Jewelers in Orange on July 15, 2004, Lux Bond & Green in Westport on Nov. 3, 2004, and Becker's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in Hartford on May 27, prosecutors said.
Carter has been detained since his arrest on state robbery charges on Nov. 16.
