CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- Central Falls police officers shot and killed a man who they said came at them with a knife.
NBC 10's Mario Hilario reported that police received a 911 call from 71 Rand St. at about 10 p.m. Sunday. The caller requested police and hung up.
Officers responded to a third-floor apartment, where they said a man came at them with a knife and refused orders to drop it. They opened fire, killing him.
Police on Monday would not say how many shots were fired, but they said it was more than one.
"I am convinced that the officers' lives were in danger, and we at Central Falls Police Department are standing by our officers," Police Chief Joseph Moran said.
Police did not release the name of the man who was shot, except to say he was in his late 20s.
Police said they believe the victim lived at the Rand Street address but that he was not the same person who initially called 911.
Gil Aguilar told NBC 10 he's related to the owners of the multifamily home, who live on the first floor. He said he did not know the man who was killed, but believes all of his family is in Guatemala.
"If anyone knows about him and anyone knows his family, it would be great to contact Central Falls police to get a hold of his family back in Guatemala," Aguilar said.
The attorney general's office and state police are investigating with Central Falls police, who said counseling will be made available to the officers involved.
Police said the officers involved in the shooting -- they did not say how many -- have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. The case will be given to a grand jury to determine if any charges will be filed.
