WBZ)CAMBRIDGE A college student accused of stabbing a UMass-Lowell professor who gave him a failing grade plans to plead guilty to attempted murder charges.
Nikhil Dhar was scheduled to go to trial Wednesday in Middlesex Superior Court for the stabbing of UMass-Lowell professor Mary Elizabeth Hooker at her home in Cambridge in December 2005.
Prosecutors say he did it because he was flunking out of school and he was afraid he would be deported to India.
Hooker told WBZ Dhar stabbed her at least four times. One wound came very close to her kidney and colon.
"I did what I could to survive," Hooker said.
She spent 24 hours in intensive care after the attack.
Dhar's lawyer, Stephen Hrones, said Dhar was here on a student visa and thought he would be deported because of his failing grades. Hrones says Dhar will plead guilty to charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
