*Academy: The Academy is a nine-week, non-residential program designed to provide the entry-level Correctional Officer candidate with all the knowledge and skills s/he will need to successfully perform the duties of Correctional Officer in any of the Rhode Department of Corrections secured facilities. Training emphasizes safety, communication skills, defensive tactics, weapons, chemical agents, CPR certifications and departmental policies.
*Minimum Requirements:
Be at least 18 years old
Have a valid photo identification card
Have a Social Security card or Alien Registration card
Possess a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
Be capable of speaking and writing in English
Ability to establish residency in Rhode Island within six months of appointment as a Correctional Officer
Have no felony convictions and no domestic violence convictions
*Salary & Benefits:
CORRECTIONAL OFFICER TRAINEE $32831 - $46568 * * Upon successful completion of a nine week pre-service training program, appointment to the position of Correctional Officer (40 hr. work week) will be at the annual salary range noted above. During the nine weeks of training, Correctional Officer Trainees will receive a base rate of $500 per week without benefits. Successful completion of the pre-service training program is required to obtain permanent status as a Correctional Officer. DUTIES: A Correctional Officer is responsible for the supervision, custody, and control of adult inmates incarcerated at the Adult Correctional facilities in Cranston, Rhode Island. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: HS Diploma/GED and employment in a private or public agency involving the supervision of others and the enforcement of rules and regulations; or, a substantially equivalent combination of education and experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be certified as physically and mentally qualified to perform the above duties after passing a physical fitness test, a medical and psychological examination conducted by a licensed physician and psychologist, and pass a comprehensive pre-screening process including a nationwide criminal records check and detailed background investigation.
