A Dallas family protested on Wednesday a deadly shooting last month in which they said a police officer killed a man over a candy bar. Brandon Washington's family said if he stole a candy bar, he should have been punished, but said he should not have died the way he did. The family said they want the officer who shot him to be punished. The Washington family said they want the officer charged, but said they've forgiven him and are praying for his family as well. The officer, identified as Martin Rivera, was on restrictive duty as the investigation continued. Police said the case would be referred to a grand jury, and after that, the police department's internal affairs unit would investigate. The 20-year-old Washington died last month, shot by a Dallas police officer responding to a complaint. Washington was accused of stealing a candy bar from a Pleasant Grove 7- Eleven convenience store. The officer said he saw the young man reaching into his pants pocket and feared he was reaching for a weapon, but Brandon was unarmed. Washington's family said they remembered how much he loved his family and how he liked to tell jokes -- things they said the public has ever heard. Washington's mother said she believed Washington's death was being ignored. "He was not a bad child at all and he didn't deserve to get shot down like that," Washington's mother said. "He didn't deserve it."
