Thousands of people, including several hundred police officers and firefighters, stood in line for hours Wednesday night to pay their respects to Officer Sean Clark.
There were powerful images: A flag draped casket carrying Clark's body. His fellow officers and family members lining up to go inside. A huge American flag billowing in the wind.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Bob Fey says, "it's an emotional overload."
It's one that's become increasingly difficult to bear for Clark's fellow officers as Wednesday brought them one step closer to a final goodbye.
Officer Fey wants people to know, "We're not supermen. Just because we put this blue uniform on every day doesn't make us stronger or better than anybody else out there. "
But for civilians like John Jackson who stood in line for three hours--they just might be. "People say, 'why are you talking so much about two police that got killed?' What if we didn't have the police? People die everyday. We're all going to die. But those people out there lose their life to uphold the law for us.
Officer Fey says it's the same law that puts everything in perspective during times like these. "We're husbands, we're wives, we're sisters, we're brothers. And we have kids that we want to go home and see every day."
Clark's family left shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening because of the long day ahead of them Thursday. Mourners were still allowed to file past Clark's open casket.
Clark, 34, had been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for about a year. He leaves behind a wife, who is six months pregnant, and a young son. The officer, a 1991 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School, lived in Lincoln County's Iron Station.
Thousands of mourners are expected today at the church again for Clark's funeral at 11 a.m.
Much of the same scene is expected for the second of the two vistations. Shelton's visitation will also be at Calvary Church today from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. His funeral is Friday at 11 a.m.
Shelton, 35, also leaves behind a wife. He had been on the police force more than six years and lived in Stanly County's Locust, although he grew up in the Monroe area.
