The Philadelphia police commissioner and top commanders patrolled the streets on Monday, hoping to curb some of the violence that has killed more than 100 people this year. Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson surprised officers of the 25th Police District in Hunting Park when he arrived in uniform during roll call. He gave encouragement to the 10 officers before they went out on patrol. Johnson said as many as 40 commanders will be patrolling high-crime sections of the city on Monday. Patrols will continue throughout the summer. Some commanders will be patrolling in their own districts, Johnson said. Johnson plans to patrol once or twice a week until he retires in December. Over the weekend, the city surpassed 100 murders when police found a 40-year-old woman dead in Kensington with her head covered in a plastic bag. In addition, three men, ages 24 to 50, were shot and killed.
