CLAYTON — In stunning and unexpected testimony, Kevin Johnson admitted Saturday that he shot Kirkwood Police Sgt. William McEntee multiple times on July 5, 2005, saying he was in a "trance" when he did it.
Johnson, 21, of Kirkwood, is charged with first-degree murder and faces the death penalty. When Johnson was arrested, three days after the killing, he denied commiting it and later entered a plea of not guilty.
Every indication in the three days of trial was that the defense would stick with the denial.
But Johnson testified Saturday, "I just shot him. I don't know why."
