Shots fired inside CNN headquarters complex in Atlanta; 2 wounded By Associated Press Tuesday, April 3, 2007 - Updated: 02:19 PM EST
ATLANTA -- A man and a woman were shot inside the building complex that houses CNN’s headquarters in what police described as a ”domestic situation.” The two were arguing when the man pulled out a gun and shot the woman, Atlanta Police Officer James Polite said. He said the man was then shot by a CNN security guard. Their conditions were not immediately released. CNN reported that the offices of its Internet operations, CNN.com, were immediately evacuated and that a suspect was in custody. Video footage showed police pointing guns at a man lying on the ground inside a building. An announcement over the building’s public-address system said there had been gunfire ”with potential casualties by the escalators” near the main entrance of the building, facing Centennial Olympic Park. ”I heard four or five shots. I really didn’t see it. I got out of there quick,” said Jas Stanford, 27, who had been helping take down a stage in the park that was used for Final Four festivities. The CNN complex also includes the Omni Hotel, a large atrium and a food court. It is connected to Philips Arena, the home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. In the food court, Trina Johnson, 44, of Atlanta, was with her daughter on a family outing. ”All of a sudden we heard a big boom. We thought it was an explosion,” Johnson said. ”We didn’t see the gun. Everybody just started running.”

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- One person has died following a shooting Tuesday at the CNN Center complex, in what Atlanta police called a "domestic situation," according to hospital spokeswoman Denise Simpson. A woman was shot and the gunman was then shot by a Turner security officer, Turner security said. The man and the woman were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, said Atlanta police spokesman James Polite. It is unclear which person died. (Watch bleeding victim on floor, suspect at gunpoint) A witness who is a CNN employee saw the man shoot the woman twice in a street-level lobby area at the northeast end of the building. (Scenes from the shooting) In a message to employees, Turner Broadcasting said the shooting took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. at an entrance near the Omni Hotel, which is part of CNN Center. The CNN.com newsroom, near the Omni, was temporarily evacuated. Some workers had already scrambled out of the building seeking cover after hearing shots. Turner Security said the man and woman were engaged in an argument before the shooting. Charles Williams, who works in technology services for Turner, saw a man dragging a woman by the hair one level above where the shooting occurred. The man told him to get out of the way. Williams went to get a guard, and then saw the man apparently take the woman downstairs. He heard gunshots less than a minute later. CNN.com writer Brad Lendon said he heard a loud bang, and then saw a woman on the ground next to a potted plant near a back entrance to the CNN.com newsroom. A man stood over her "and fired at least two shots into her," he said. After the shots, Lendon said, the gunman "looked around, his head turning in my direction. I don't know if he saw me, but at that moment the gravity of what I'd witnessed hit me. I turned away and tried to find the safest way I could out of the CNN.com newsroom."
