Dial 211 - for nonemergencies and social service info

Starting tomorrow, Bay State residents will have a new phone number to call - 211 - when seeking nonemergency information and referrals for social services. Lt. Gov. Tim Murray is scheduled to join 200 community leaders from across the state at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Natick at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow to launch the free service, known as Mass 211.
The program is primarily funded by the Council of Massachusetts United Ways, and operated by Framingham-based United Way of Tri-County, at a cost of nearly $500,000. In-kind support is being provided by the state's Executive Office of Health and Human Services.
"Mass 211 is a way to connect people that need help with the people that can provide help," said Paul Mina, executive director of Mass 211. He is also president of United Way of Tri-County.
The Federal Communications Commission established 211 as a resource for social service and disaster response agencies. Another aim was to reduce the number of nonemergency calls to 911.
Massachusetts is the 17th state to adopt the 211 system.
