Does Danvers, Peabody, or Salem hire reserves? And if so how does one become one?

Danvers hires into a reserve list, they are not allowed to work. They utilize that list to fill all full-time slots (unless someone laterals). Peabody hires reserves, and fills the full-time slots from the reserve list as well. In Peabody reserves are allowed to work details only. I beleive salem is the same way. To get on the departments, you need to take the civil service test (Sign up is on the Mass.gov website). To be honest, you'll need to be a resident of the town you're trying to get hired in, otherwise your chances are pretty slim. Hope that helps.

I believe Middelton still hires reserves and they may be non-civil service. I know a guy who lives in Boxford and is a paid Middelton Reserve or Special

Salem hires reserves off of the civil service list, and then hires full time officers off of the reserve list. Generally you are hired off the reserve list to full time based on seniority on the reserve list, unless you already have the full time academy. Once a reserve, you can work details. Plenty of work during July, August, and October, but that's about it. Great department to work for. If they hired full time more frequently and the cost of living wasn't so outrageous, I would have stayed.

If you're looking to get on as a reserve in a non-civil service municipality on the north shore. Check out Newbury, West Newbury, Groveland, Georgetown, Middleton, Topsfield, Boxford, Essex, Hamilton, Wenham and Rowley. Plus it might not hurt to get a dispatching job in one of those towns first, because Officers have to learn the E-911 system anyways. Salisbury I believe puts on reserves or specials in a non-civil service capacity despite being a civil service town. I think they list the info on their website. Either way whether you stay in the small town or not it's still experience you'll gain and a stepping stone if you want to move on. Good luck.
