I don't know who skippy is! but all I'm saying is that I don't see how someone would have the hell bugged out of them by having a chance to go through a great academy. MPOC is only worth more on paper, State Police = Better Training. That's only from what a little birdie told me atleast!

I second that! The sixteenth will have a few of our women in it! Look out sixteen - Smith is coming baaaack!

Actually you need to be employed by the sponsoring agency.

I get what youre offering regarding the quality of training, and the statement about the MPOC being worth more on paper is correct also. But remember, you can use the MPOC for a campus job, but you cant use the SSPO for a municipal job. So in this instance, quality aside... the paper is what matters in the end. The training might be great...but if it doesnt get you in the door, its useless.

Posted by: Macop

Having gone through both myself, I have to say that the SSPO is much better than the MPOC in every way. Now you cant use the SSPO for municipal in MA but you can in just about most the other states. When I was just out of the SSPO I did the research to every state and heard back from I think it was 37 that would take it as a lateral transfer. You would only need to do inservice or a lateral acdemy.

Posted by: Southside

What do you say to other agencies out of state? I will be graduating in December from the full time MPOC. Do I tell them I am graduating from the full time police academy in Massachusetts and want to know if I can lateral to their department?

Thanks

Posted by: JoninNH

I am pretty sure there is a Florida cop on this board who had his SSPO academy accepted down there in sunny Fllllooridia. Also, if you search of this site you will find a few other threads to help you on this.

I am also curious, can you pay tuition and get a seat, or do you need to be employed by a campus department first? Thanks.

I had a Academy Classmate in #14 that sponsored himself. He was not employed at a College Police Department until after his graduation. I would call and speak with Tpr. Lavigne just to get clarification.

I'm not talking about the quality of training.. I'm talking about the validity of it. I can't work for a municipal PD with it... It would make sense to go to MPOC for just a few weeks longer and have the full cert.

Validity? I question the validity of a system that recognizes an RI Academy more than a SSPO!

Posted by: Mitpo62

SSPO is accepted in Florida; not sure about a R/I academy though. With that training, all that is required here is a 12 day cross-over course.

Posted by: E_Javi2

I'm an out of State Police Officer that just moved up here. They accept my Academy in both SSPO and MPOC. If I had to go to an Academy i will prefer to go to the best quality.

Posted by: nightcopppa

I went through the MBTA Police Academy with several Officers that had previously been through the S.S.P.O. Academy. All agreed that the State SSPO runs a good Academy, but that it didn't come close to touching the MBTA. Not all municipal academies are run like camp happyland at Boylston. Ask Chief Churchill who runs a real academy in Mass, and he will tell you two places. The state, and MBTA. I've worked with Officers who have graduated from municipal academies and the SSPO academy that were as dumb as a stump, and looked like someone tried to shove a hundred pounds of sh_t into a teabag. I've also worked with intelligent, squared away Officers who were chizzled out of stone that went through those same academies. I believe that it is all what you put into it.

I agree completely!! There should only be ONE recognized program/course in this state.

Posted by: VTCOP

Just having one course would be too easy for Mass. I have also been approved for lateral transfer if I can ever find a place to work in mass.

Has anyone with just an SSPO academy ever been waivered through for states like Vermont, NH or Maine?

Yes, I worked with a guy who had an SSPO, and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff in NH, he just needed to take the law package through the NH academy, which was something like 4 weeks long. I don't know how many departments do this though, I interviewed with Nashua NH and they said that that they send everybody through the academy even if they've already gone. Something about having their officers bond, forming better teams.

Not questioning you, but I find it doubtful that Nashua would alocate funds to send certified officers back thru the academy as a "team building" exercise. Again, I'm not questioning you, just scratching my head. Seems like a waste of money to me. But then again, I am not a real big fan of Nausea (aka North Lawrence).

I made two requests for information on the 16th SSPO and no one sent me an application packet. Does anyone know if the filing period has closed?

Posted by: Irishpride

JoninNH,

Your employer should be making the request to the SPA, I would follow it up with whoever is in charge of training for your department.

I found mine at Walmart....almost have everything... did you ordered your uniform shirt yet? I did mine and i have a question.......does your shirt have two plastic ring holes where the badge goes?

Posted by: melissa112580

Just a heads up if anyone from the SSPO 16 who has nit ordered their First Responder book yet the ext. 8207 is wrong it should be ext. 8197 (customer Service Dept.).....still the same phone number. I called the 8207 and they stated that they didn't have an account for our class....so they moved it over to the service dept.....when you order it only takes a couple days to receive ...same with ordering the shirt.

Posted by: ecpd402

As a graduate of SSPO 13 I would like to say good luck. Be prepared to run. Sir Discipline is the instant willingness to obey orders respect for authority and self reliance Sir.
