CLEVELAND (AP) — An off-duty police officer shot a 17-year-old theft suspect while responding to a call that people were stealing items from cars in a parking lot early Friday, police said. The teen died later at a hospital. The officer, who had not been identified, was in uniform while working security at Lexington Village apartment complex on the city’s east side, police Lt. Thomas Stacho said.
The officer investigated and recovered some property apparently taken from vehicles in the parking lot. The officer also noticed some smashed car windows and stereos missing, Stacho said.

He took the recovered property to the complex office, then went back to the scene to investigate further. The officer had a confrontation with the driver of a vehicle with several car stereos in the back seat around 1:45 a.m. and fired shots, Stacho said. The car then crashed.

Angelo Miller was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he died.

Officials planned to interview the officer, an 18-year veteran, who has been placed on administrative leave. Stacho said there was no indication that the suspect was armed.

“I don’t know what the officer’s state of mind was at the time of the shooting,” Stacho said.
