2008 Ford Crown Victoria relegated to fleet status

Ford has pulled the plug on the consumer version of the Crown Victoria, as they're offering the 2008 model as a fleet vehicle only. On that front, all '08 Crown Vic Police Interceptors are flexible-fuel vehicles, as the cars' 4.6L V8 is now E85 ethanol-compatible. Could this finally be the beginning of the end for the aged Crown Vic? We'll see.

No more new Whacker cars?

Subject: Future of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI)

On January 23, 2006, Ford Motor Company announced the details of our "Way Forward" revitalization plan. "Way Forward" is a sweeping, innovative plan designed to strengthen all Ford operations and ensure we retain our position as America's Car Company. The plan impacts virtually every aspect of our business, including vehicle assembly plants and production capacity.

Since the "Way Forward" announcement, we recognize there has been extensive speculation regarding the future of many Ford products, including the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The purpose of this letter is to clarify Ford's position on CVPI and ensure you have accurate information. The bottom line:
· Ford Motor Company is committed to the law enforcement community.
· Ford Motor Company will continue to produce the CVPI well into the future.

The CVPI will continue to be assembled at our St. Thomas Assembly Plant. The decision to move to a single shift operation at St. Thomas is designed to smooth the production process and ensure a more consistent product flow. Even with one shift of assembly operations, Ford will have sufficient production to meet all your police car order demands.

The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor remains the only body-on-frame, police car rear crash tested at 75 mph. It has the largest interior space at 109.8 cubic feet and largest trunk at 20.6 cubic feet. It also has exclusive safety options including ballistic door panels and a fire suppression system. While we're confident CVPI is the best police vehicle on the road today, we are also committed to an even better product in the future. To deliver on that commitment, we will make a significant investment in product upgrades over the next several years.

Ford Motor Company built the first police package car in 1950, and has built police cars every year since then. We have the best selling dealership network in the country, and a Ford Fleet sales and service team that can address all your vehicle needs. Ford has a full-line of vehicles: cars, SUVs, vans, wagons, and trucks to help you better serve your communities. Ford Motor Company is the leader in government sales and we plan to stay that way.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call our Fleet Customer Information Center at 1-800-34-FLEET or write Tony Gratson, Government Sales Manager at tgratson@ford.com.

Thank you for purchasing Ford products. If there is anything we can do for you, please let us know.

Apparently in 2011 they are going to make a new car instead of the vic; it will come in the "Police Interceptor" package

The anemic Crown Vic has been circling the drain for some time now...

I’m surprised that it took this long to stop making the civilian Crown Vic… It seems like most of the old folks go for the Mercury…

Found this from PFSA...

The most commonly asked question in all of fleet management…What is the future of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor? Lacking a formal press release from Ford Fleet, the entire police community has been riddled with rumors, speculation, doom, gloom, misinformation and, of course, some intentional misdirection.

It was fairly common knowledge that the CVPI would be produced, with a few upgrades, through the 2008 model year. Yet panic has seemed to set in. After all, the 2006 CVPI has been on the streets for 6 months, and no one knows anything for sure about a car just 2 calendar years away. Some fleet managers have even asked Ford if their orders for 2006 CVPIs would be filled! Of course, they will.

Two major hurdles existed…and the CVPI cleared both of them. First, the King of Torts-style, class-action lawsuit against the CVPI had to be won. Based, in part, on testimony from Ford Police Advisory Board members, the hard reality of physics and vehicle engineering, Ford did prevail, even in a corporation-hostile Illinois court. The high-energy, rear crash concerns are a situational hazard for all traffic and patrol officers. Ford’s safety upgrades to the CVPI have been very effective. NHTSA has found no defects in the CVPI. The significant class action lawsuits have been dropped. The CVPI has been exonerated.

The second hurdle was even tougher…Ford’s plan for restructuring to regain profitability. Announced in January 2006, some assembly plants were scheduled for closure. The St. Thomas Assembly Plant, home of the Crown Victoria, was spared. St. Thomas was backed off from two shifts to one, but the future of the plant is secure and sales of the Panther platform vehicles remain strong.

In an intensely competitive business climate, some things are still confidential, and some things are pending additional engineering development. Ultimately, of course, any production plan can still change in the volatile automotive market. The $3 gasoline proved that. All that said, Ford recently answered The Big Question…but don’t expect a formal press release for months.

The CVPI will live on beyond the 2008 model! The planning is for the freshened 2009 car to remain a V8-powered, body-on-frame, RWD sedan with the same wheelbase, interior room and trunk space. This new CVPI will have a number of safety upgrades. Expect upgraded performance.

In 1950, Ford became the first automaker to produce a formal police package. They have been at it non-stop, year-after-year, through thick and thin, ever since. With investment in the 2009 police car, Ford intends to keep their market dominance. I cannot give you the specifics, but trust me, Ford’s best Police Interceptor is yet to come. And it is going to come…

Wasn't there a model named the Ford Interceptor coming out in '09? Does anyone know if this will be a police package, or a civi model.

I know I know. But a few less is always a good thing.

Ford has no slated vehicle to replace the CV. The "interceptor" was supposed to be named the galaxy but was wish, washed by the big wigs. The interceptor is not slated for production at this time. Ford does have plans to compete with charger, 300 and new G8 in 08 with a new v8 rwd car that the interceptor was supposed to inspire. The CVPI will most likely continue far into the next decade
