BALTIMORE, Md. - An off-duty Maryland Transit Administration officer shot and wounded two would-be robbers early Friday morning after three people got out of a van and approached him, police said.
The unidentified transit officer was walking in Fells Point when two men and a juvenile approached him and at least one had a gun, according to Baltimore police spokesman Officer Donny Moses. The MTA officer heard one of them chamber a round in the handgun, pulled his service weapon and began firing, according to police. A 19-year-old man was shot in the thigh and buttocks and a 16-year-old was shot in the ankle. Moses said the men were not able to return fire. Police caught the three suspects nearby after they fled the scene in the van. They were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment and will be charged with attempted armed robbery and auto theft since the van was stolen, Moses said. In January, Baltimore police Det. Troy L. Chesley Sr., 34, was killed in an attempted robbery and shootout as he was arriving at his girlfriend's home in West Baltimore. Chesley was not wearing his uniform when someone approached him. He had just gotten off work and a gunfight ensued after the individual approached him. He was not in uniform but returned fire with his service weapon and was shot several times. He died at an area hospital.
