MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Two Cudahy police officers shot and killed a 42-year-old man early Wednesday while investigating a sexual assault in an upper flat near Sheridan Park. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said the man, a suspect in the assault, advanced toward the officers with a knife when they confronted him in the apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 2:20 a.m. The sheriff's department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office are investigating the actions of the man and the officers, who are now on administrative leave. The fatal confrontation was precipitated by a 911 call made from the street by a woman who alleged she had been sexually assaulted in the 3600 block of E. Barnard Ave., Clarke said. Officers responding to her call spoke with Alex Gregory, 42, while he stood on a porch off the upper flat. He refused to come out of the building, and the officers eventually forced their way inside. "He was told to put the weapon down, and he refused to comply," Clarke said. Clarke declined to say how many shots were fired or where Gregory was hit. Two of the three officers inside the house fired their weapons, Clarke said. Two of the officers involved have six years of law enforcement experience, and the third is a 26-year veteran. Clarke did not name the officers, and Cudahy Police officials declined to comment and referred questions to the sheriff and the DA's office. Clarke said the slain man was wanted on an outstanding warrant for violating his probation. The woman who reported the alleged sexual assault was also wanted on a probation violation and was taken into custody, he said.
