AUSTIN, Tex - Travis County deputies were involved in a shootout overnight that ended in a suspect being shot to death.
It began at the Precinct 4 substation in southeast Travis County and ended in the 10400 block of FM 812 last night, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Roger Wade.
Wade said a deputy heard shots outside of the Precinct 4 offices near U.S. 183, where deputies typically fuel their vehicles, at about 10:35 p.m. The deputy went to find out where the shots were coming from, and the deputy said he heard shots coming from a vehicle, which sped off at about 100 mph down FM 812, Wade said.
Deputies chased the vehicle, and Wade said the suspect ran a deputy off the road, damaging the patrol car and leaving the deputy with minor injuries. That deputy was taken to the hospital.
As officials pursued the man, he proceeded to Texas 21 in Bastrop County when the man pulled over and started shooting at the deputies, according to Wade. Deputies shot back. The suspect was hit by an unknown number of bullets and was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m.
Texas 21 near Voss Parkway (a mile east of Cedar Creek in Bastrop County) was closed this morning until around 11:30 while officials investigated.
It is the second local shooting involving local law enforcement this week and the third in the past two weeks.
According to Statesman records, the last time a Travis County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a suspect was July 2003, when Deputy Gregory Truitt shot and killed a man in East Austin after the man pulled Truitt into his car.
