Overkill on La Russa?

Fact finding or media feeding frenzy? That's the question raised by the massive amount of coverage Thursday after the arrest of Cardinals manager Tony La Russa on suspicion of drunken driving in Florida.
On a day when a major story broke that figures to affect thousands of St. Louisans for years - the city's school district being stripped of its accreditation, setting up a state takeover - La Russa received top billing on local media outlets.
KSDK (Channel 5) sports director Rene Knott said on the noon newscast that there are "many questions that people want to have answered from Tony La Russa'' as the station led with that story.
And the three local TV stations that air early evening newscasts (KTVI, KMOV and KSDK) led with La Russa over the schools.

"The issue in a case like this comes down to what story affects the most people,'' Channel 5 news director Mike Shipley said in an interview. "In our area, I don't think there is any question the story most people were interested in today was the Tony La Russa story. The school story certainly is an important one, (it) absolutely affects a whale of a lot of people and is important to the entire region. But in terms of a story most people were interested in hearing about, it was the La Russa story.
