Police: Girl Apparently Thought Gun Was Real

UPPER DARBY, Pa. -- A child who brought a realistic replica of a gun to school apparently thought it was real, said police in suburban Philadelphia.

The 8-year-old girl told a teacher she needed it "for protection."

Upper Darby Township police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said the third-grader took the authentic-looking replica of a German Luger pistol with her Monday.
He said she knew her older brother would not be able to walk her home from the bus stop that day and she was afraid to walk home alone.

Other children told a teacher about the gun, and the police were called.

Chitwood said the girl will be suspended for 10 days and could be expelled from school, but she won't be charged with a crime.

He said she didn't threaten anyone, so she didn't break any laws.

Wonderful that we're teaching our children that it's more noble to be a victim than to fight back.

I'll have to reread the article but I don't believe it touched upon what measures are being taken to see that children can walk home wihtout being in fear of their safety.
