A GIRL’S LOVE, THEN HORROR: ‘You will always be in my heart’ Sarah Benoit By JOHN P. KELLY The Patriot Ledger NORWELL - There were gunshots through the back door and messages of love between daddy and daughter scrawled on the walls.
‘‘Sarah, Daddy loves you very much,’’ reads one. ‘‘Dear DaD, you will always be in my heart,’’ reads another.
The messages were on the walls and inside cabinet doors of an apartment in Norwell where the Benoit family lived before being evicted three months ago. They were placed in an apartment in Brockton by an agency that helps the homeless.
It was in that apartment that police arrested Mark Benoit yesterday and charged him with murdering his wife, Cynthia, and their 9-year-old daughter Sarah, who had written the message to her dad on the walls in Norwell.
The Prospect Street apartment where the Benoit family lived for two years in Norwell was in a shambles when they were evicted on a Saturday in early December, their landlord said.
The landlord, who asked not to be identified by name, said police escorted the couple and their daughter from the premises on Dec. 9. The Benoits reportedly owed more than $12,000 in unpaid rent.
Their son, Joseph Benoit, who turned 18 yesterday, moved in with a friend’s family. He is a senior at Norwell High School.
‘‘I half felt sorry for them, more for the little girl than anything,’’ the landlord said.
A ‘TIME BOMB TICKING’: Ex-girlfriend describes double-murder suspect as violent, frequently drunk
By SouthofBoston.com The 42-year-old Brockton man accused yesterday of killing his wife and daughter has been a ‘‘time bomb ticking’’ for years, a former girlfriend said.
The woman, who asked not to be identified, took out a restraining order in 1993 when Mark Benoit turned violent in her home a few dates into their relationship.
‘‘He busted up a lot of things in my house,’’ she said. ‘‘He would show up to my house drunk and violent.’’
Despite the court order, Benoit attacked the woman outside the Hanover Mall. The woman, who now lives in Brockton, said he choked her, shook her and slammed her against cars.
‘‘He had a short temper, and I wasn’t the only one he had problems with,’’ the woman said. ‘‘Everybody was afraid of him - everybody.’’
Benoit was charged with assault. The woman eventually dropped the charges in hopes of putting the episode behind her.
She said she has not seen Benoit since 1993.
Benoit, who grew up in Rockland, is accused of killing his wife, Cynthia, and 9-year-old daughter Sarah inside their home in Brockton.
