A man was taken into custody Wednesday after police say shots were fired at an animal control officer trying to pick up two dogs.
KMBC's Chris Nagus reported that a concerned meter reader had called police about two pit bulls in the back yard of a home on Cedar Avenue.
An animal control officer went to the residence to pick up the pit bulls and received permission from a woman at the house, Nagus reported.
Then, a man showed up who was upset that the dogs were being taken away.
"Got out there and had some difficulty with the owner -- the owner took a shot at him," said Aimee Wells with Independence Animal Control.
No one was injured.
Police stopped the man as he was driving away in a car. He was taken into custody and the pit bulls were removed by animal control.
Wells said the pit bulls are very friendly and are doing fine.
"They were both wagging their tails, giving me licks on the face," Wells said.
Neighbor Joann Hollaman, who has a dog, said she understands her neighbor's anger, but she doesn't condone shooting anyone.
"They were sweet little dogs; never caused any problems, never got out of their yard," neighbor Joann Hollaman said.
Meanwhile, Wells said animal control officers are often more concerned about people, rather than the animals they're picking up.
"It's very rarely the dogs -- it's the owners. We tend to be more weary of the people than the dogs," Wells said.
