NEW BEDFORD — Police are still searching for Jose R. "June Bug" Garcia, who they suspect of pulling off a disabled man's prosthetic leg, then holding a knife to his throat and beating him on the head with a lead pipe. Department spokesman Capt. Richard Spirlet yesterday released a photo of Mr. Garcia, 36, of 306 North Front St. Mr. Garcia is 5 feet, 10 inches tall with brown hair and eyes, and weights about 160 pounds, according to police. A warrant for his arrest charges him with home invasion, armed robbery and assault on a disabled person. Two other New Bedford men — Brian "Shorty" Still, 26, of 5 Bonneau Court and James P. Dean, 28, of 51 Tallman St. — have already been arrested in connection with the Tuesday night home invasion that left Gary Kuindersma, 40, hospitalized. Mr. Kuindersma told police Mr. Garcia, Mr. Still and Mr. Dean entered his 6 Bonneau Court apartment at about 9:30 p.m. He said Mr. Garcia tackled him, pulled off his artificial leg, then grabbed a larger kitchen knife from a nearby counter and held it to his throat. Mr. Garcia began beating him with a pipe and Mr. Still joined in, striking him with the grate from his stove, Mr. Kuindersma told police. He said Mr. Dean did not hit him, but stole his cell phone and ran off. All of the suspects eventually fled.
