BOSTON — A leader of the Fall River Mafioso gang received a 12-year prison sentence in federal court yesterday.
A joint investigation by federal, state and local authorities last year resulted in federal drug charges against Michael Peralta, 25, of 151 Quequechan St.
Prosecutors described him as "the number one problem" law enforcement officials in the Fall River and Tiverton areas faced. Federal court documents say he headed the Mafioso, a gang involved with drug trafficking, firearms violations and violence.
On March 2, Mr. Peralta pleaded guilty to one could of conspiracy to distribute at least 50 grams of crack cocaine and three substantive counts of distributing five or more grams of crack between May and June 2005.
Yesterday, Judge Joseph L. Tauro sentenced him to 12 years and 7 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Ten other men were arrested in the investigation that netted Mr. Peralta.
They are facing various federal and state gun and drug charges. Local authorities have said they are looking to pass serious players in gang activity to federal prosecutors, because at the federal level they would face longer sentences, in prisons sometimes located halfway across the country.
