Romney faulted for not defending general's comments on homosexuality

Jim Brown
A former Republican presidential candidate says former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has hurt his run for the White House by not supporting America's top general over remarks the military leader made that homosexual acts are "immoral."

Governor Romney told CNN's Larry King that the condemnation of homosexuality by Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman General Peter Pace was "inappropriate for the public discourse." Romney went on to say "in a governmental setting, the right way to go is to show more of an outpouring of tolerance."
Gary Bauer, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, says Romney's decision not to back Pace was "a mistake" that will probably come back to bite him.
"I was sorry to hear Governor Romney's view on that matter," Bauer laments. "The idea that somebody holding office cannot say what their moral view is on something again is something right out of the secular left-wing's playbook." He adds: It's not something … that the average conservative or the average American believes."
Bauer, president of the group American Values, disagrees with Romney that Pace's comments were inappropriate.
"We want our military leaders to show evidence of moral thinking and moral leadership -- that's very important from our standpoint as a democratic republic, and that being the military that defends us," Bauer shares. "So I believe Governor Romney made a mistake [in condemning General Pace's comments], and I think it will probably hurt him as the competition [for the GOP nomination] proceeds."
In response to Pace's comments, Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have both stated they do not believe homosexuality is immoral.
Bauer says 25 years ago if a leading American general would have said there is nothing immoral about homosexuality, he would have been run out of office immediately. Today, Bauer says, saying the opposite is what gets you in trouble.
