Barre chief search planned

By James F. Russell CORRESPONDENT

BARRE— Selectmen have decided to conduct a police chief search instead of naming the town’s acting chief to the position on a permanent basis, Selectmen Chairman Earl N. Sample confirmed yesterday after the board’s regularly scheduled meeting.

“As of right now, we will be advertising” for a permanent police chief, Mr. Sample said.

The acting chief, Erik J. Demetropoulos was promoted to the job Nov. 1. He had been a sergeant. Former Chief John J. Manzi resigned Nov. 1.

Mr. Sample said details remain to be worked out regarding who would serve on a screening committee and when the job would be advertised as well as any timetable for the appointment.

Chief Demetropoulos said he has a contract with the town to serve as the chief through June 30. Mr. Sample confirmed that the chief’s contract runs until the end of fiscal 2007. The chief is paid $29 per hour, town payroll records showed.

When Chief Demetropoulos was named acting chief Nov. 1, Mr. Sample said the board was undecided on how long he would serve as acting chief, if the board would advertise for a permanent chief, or if the board intended to name him permanent chief.

Chief Demetropoulos said at the time that he was interested in serving as permanent chief, saying he was most concerned about increasing the officers corps.

During last night’s board meeting, selectmen unanimously appointed part-time officer Paul Magierowski as a provisional full-time police officer at a starting salary of $39,000 per year. He was recommended by Chief Demetropoulos, who said Officer Magierowski would attend the full-time police academy training after July 1, and that in the meantime the department would seek a temporary waiver.

The chief said the department remains short-staffed, and that the town would continue to advertise for officers. He said a candidate recently declined a full-time job with the Barre force.

In another matter last night, selectmen warned that any vehicle that impedes the town’s snow-removal operations is subject to immediate towing. Mr. Sample estimated that it would cost at least $70 to retrieve an automobile.

In another matter, the board received a petition from residents of Valley Road, who want the town to put a weight limit to 5 tons on a half-mile section of the street between Route 122 and James Street.

Michael J. Philbin, 50, of 80 Valley Road, who presented the document to the board on which 11 signatures are shown, said, “We need some relief and road repairs.”

He said more than 100 trucks per day traverse the residential street, and that speeding is a problem. Police said they would step up enforcement.

In other business, selectmen unanimously approved a $143,200 contract to Kinsman Contruction of Hooksett, N.H., to install an apparatus that will ensure the sprinkler system at Ruggles Lane elementary school works properly. The system has been in disrepair for years.

Good luck to the Acting Chief. No doubt in my mind that he can do the job and do it well.
