Cops: Plymouth man tried to gas his ex

By TAMARA RACE
The Patriot Ledger

PLYMOUTH - Police have charged a Plymouth man with attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend and three other people by redirecting the exhaust fumes from a furnace back into her house.

Police say Christopher Restaino, 26, broke into a house on Melix Avenue in the Manomet section of Plymouth, stole a CD player and other items, and tampered with the furnace and gas valve before leaving.

The ex-girlfriend, who is 26, her parents, who were visiting and a roommate entered the house about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

‘‘The whole house just stunk of gas,’’ said the victim, who is 26 and asked not to be identified by name.

‘‘My father went into the basement to see if gas was leaking somewhere. We opened all the windows. He discovered that the pipe coming out of the boiler had been disconnected. It was turned at a 90-degree angle, facing into the basement. Plus, the gas pipe right under my bedroom had been loosened, so gas was leaking from both areas,’’ she said.

The house is a one-story ranch-style building.

‘‘We called 911, realizing that, obviously, there was foul play,’’ she said.

The fire department came, checked out the house and turned off the gas. Fire officials discovered the furnace had been revented and called police.

Suspect has a troubled history with women

By TAMARA RACE
The Patriot Ledger

PLYMOUTH - A Plymouth man accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend and several of her family members by tampering with a furnace exhaust and a natural gas valve has a history of troubled relationships, court records show.

Several women, in addition to his most recent ex-girlfriend, have sought restraining orders against Christopher Restaino in the last three years because of his controlling, assaultive and obsessive behavior, according to restraining order affidavits on file in Plymouth District Court.

Hanson police in 2005 urged a woman in that town to get the restraining order after reviewing Restaino’s criminal record.

Restaino was stalking her at home and at work and leaving repeated messages on her phone after the two broke up, she said in her affidavit.

Women in Kingston and Marshfield tell the same story in their affidavits.

Restaino obtained a restraining order against one of the women after accusing her of assault and harassment.

The Plymouth ex-girlfriend sought her restraining order early this month after Restaino, 26, of Diamond Street, Plymouth, began harassing her and her family with phone messages and stalking, according to court files.

The two had dated for about four months before she broke it off because of Restaino’s behavior, according to documents.
