Bridgewater State College Police Department

Position Title Police Lieutenant Requisition Number 0469 Job Description Staff Assistant, Police Lieutenant
This is an exempt position that falls within the APA union.

As part of the command staff of the department, assist the Chief and Deputy Chief of Police in the coordination of the day-to-day operation of the Police Department and provide leadership for and supervision of the law enforcement, crime prevention and investigation work of police, security, dispatch and support personnel.

Core Duties:

Supervises and coordinates nighttime shift operation by:

1. Personally responding to major incident scenes to supervise response by police officers;

2. Assigning tasks and planning duties;

3. Conducting roll call and briefing sessions;

4. Routinely meeting with and directing shift sergeant(s);

5. Overseeing all preliminary investigations occurring on shift;

6. Commanding as officer-in-charge in special circumstances and at special events, as required;

7. Coordinating shift operations, activities and communications, and maintaining cooperation with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials and agencies as required;

8. Executing special assignments relative to police work, as required;

9. Preparing written reports and memoranda;

10. Routinely briefing the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police and other College administrators when appropriate and as directed;

11. Performing the duties of police officers as needed;

12. Assuming other responsibilities as assigned or developed. Required Minimum Qualifications 1. High school diploma or GED.

2. Basic training equivalent to that of a state or municipal police officer. Equivalency is determined by the department.

3. Minimum of four years of full-time experience in police work.

4. Leadership ability and ability to supervise effectively.

5. Ability to be licensed as a police officer in Massachusetts.

6. Must be computer literate.

7. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing.

8. Valid driver's license and good driving record required.

9. License to carry firearms required.


Other Mandatory Requirements of the Position:

1. Must carry a pager and NEXTEL phone and remain on-call 24 hours a day for emergencies and other critical situations.

2. Must attend NEILEM law enforcement supervisor's training.

3. If the successful candidate is not currently certified as an Emergency Medical Technician, s/he will be required to attend required training and obtain state certification.

4. Must successfully complete initial and annual firearms qualifications training.

5. Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements. Preferred Qualifications Special Instructions to Applicants
