As more officers arrived at the scene, a constellation of flashing lights revealed the heavy response by law enforcement. "I need a squad immediately," someone barked over police scanner traffic as gunshots popped through the static. "Officer with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, Crescentville-Reading. That area should be safe. We need them here, an officer down, shot in the shoulder. We'll drag them out." The two officers wounded Friday in a fatal shootout told their story for the first time Wednesday, as police continue to investigate the bizarre incident that left one man dead. "Your body either fights or flies," said Sgt. Matt Beiser, who was shot in the shoulder and leg when a traffic stop turned deadly. "I didn't have time but to flee. All I could really do was turn. I turned to the right to avoid being shot." The two officers said they never forgot how close they came to dying, and thanked officers who came to their aid. "Those officers saved me," said Jeff Duma of West Chester police, who was shot in the shoulder. "I was hit (and) bullets were flying over my head." The officers expressed sorrow for the family of Matthew Hutchinson, whose body was found after the battle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. "I feel tremendously bad for that family that they have lost a son in that situation, (it's) so bizarre (and) there's so many questions," Duma said. Preliminary toxicology reports released Wednesday show Hutchinson used marijuana and opiates before he died. Investigators said he became belligerent during a traffic stop, and driver John Brucho sped off and crashed his car. Hutchinson began shooting at officers when they arrived at the crash scene, police said, before taking his own life underneath a nearby trailer. Brucho and another passenger, Bruce Suggs, are in police custody and face a variety of charges in the incident.
