A man who threatened Jacksonville Beach police officers with two box cutters, then lunged toward them was shot early Wednesday morning, according to Jacksonville Beach police.
An officer reported suspicious vehicle around 1:30 a.m. in a parking lot at First Street and 13th Avenue South with a man and a woman shouting and screaming at each other inside. After calling for back up, three officers approached the vehicle.
"The female was very nervous, and they tried to separate her from the vehicle to interview her. At that point, the male suspect turned back into the vehicle, grabbed two knives, put one of them in each hand, held them over his head and began yelling and screaming at the officers and made verbal threats to them," Jacksonville Beach police Sgt. Thomas Bingham said. "He started walking toward the officers while the officers drew their weapons and started backing up, trying to give him some space, telling him to drop the weapons."
Cpl. Tony Bennek fired one shot, hitting the man, identified as Matthew Alexander, 20, of North Carolina, in the chest. Alexander was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.
Police said the 18-year-old woman, Jesse Winkler, also from North Carolina, was not hurt and will not be charged with any crime. Investigators said she may have been Alexander's girlfriend and they are still not sure if she was in any danger.
Bennek, a nine-year veteran of the Jacksonville Beach Police Department was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard while a police-involved shooting is investigated.
Bingham said it appears that the shooting followed guidelines because a suspect was threatening with a deadly weapon.
Alexander is being charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Police said he was wanted on three warrants out of North Carolina stemming from a domestic altercation as his father's house last weekend and fleeing police after that incident.
"You always have to be ready. This was -- at the time -- a low-priority-type call," Bingham said. "There's no indication at the very beginning at the this person would take that type of action toward the officer, but it did escalate very quickly."
Police said Winkler called her parents trying to arrange how to get home.
