DAYTON, Ohio - Police investigators dispute the account of a fellow officer who said he was shot Tuesday while patrolling a neighborhood, authorities said. Dayton policeman Donald Fink was shot in the chest, but escaped serious injury because he was wearing a bulletproof vest. He told investigators he saw a shadowy figure in his car's rearview mirror, got out of the vehicle, happened upon the suspect and was shot. Police Chief Julian Davis said the investigation determined Fink was not shot by an unknown suspect and there is no suspect at large. Davis would not say who shot Fink. He said the investigating is continuing. Fink was treated at a hospital and released.
Dayton police director Julian Davis said an officer who said he was shot by an unknown assailant actually shot himself with a gun he stole from the police department's property room. Davis said he doesn't know why 31-year-old Donald Fink, a five-year veteran of the force, stole the handgun and shot himself in the stomach Tuesday while patrolling. Fink had been wearing a bulletproof vest and wasn't seriously injured. Davis said Fink is currently on sick leave and is convalescing at a medical facility. According to Davis, Fink is facing possible charges of inducing panic, theft in office, theft of a firearm and tampering with evidence.
