Oh Jeezus!

Another highly informative topic!

Posted by: Irishpride

MPD,

Honestly man, if you don't like a topic just don't read it. I'm not sure if you're overworked but your sarcasm lacks your usual wit.

Posted by: ecpd402

mpd61 what topics do you find important and we will talk about them. Anyway thanks for taking the busy time out of your schedule to read the topic.

Posted by: j809

Don't mind MPD61, he is under alot of stress, mostly from dumb topics generated here. But he is seeing a shrink at the VA three times a week and promises some positive changes soon!!

We are a little worried here at the station when he brings his AR-15 at work and cleans it for half the shift.

Posted by: j809

Here are the best college PDs to work for:

Harvard University PD
MIT PD
Boston University PD
UMASS Amherst
UMASS Dartmouth
UMASS Boston
Bridgewater State College PD
Massasoit PD
Babson College PD

Posted by: j809

Maybe you are referring to the old Chief.

Posted by: mpd61

O.K.
I'm sorry...............Jared you're right;

Here's my opinion.
Any State College/University in TEXAS is great to work for.
Northeastern University in Boston.

Stand by..............I'll take it a step further.

Posted by: Opie

I've also heard the same about Harvard, BU, & Bridgewater State. Just seem to be missing out on Campus Jobs, especially those. I have my eye on a few my way as well as in Boston. Any Suggestions? Heard a rumor Harvard is looking to put on a lot of new ofcs in the not too distant future.

Posted by: kdk240

I was talking to a HUPD officer last Sat. He told me that the talk is "35-40
new officers, over the next 2 years" and they have the $ for it. How true who knows, that's just what was told to me.

Posted by: DUKE1005

I recently spoke with an Officer at HUPD regarding the 35-40 additional Officers that they are looking to add to their department over the next couple of years. That part is true, however, I inquired with their HR department about 3 weeks ago and was told that they were not looking to hire anymore people for this fiscal year. Who knows though? nfire:

Posted by: cordasco

If HUPD is not looing to hire "this fiscal year" that not all that bad. FY04 starts July 1. It sounds encouraging. I heard Harvard is a great place to work.

Posted by: mpd61

Ah......O.K.
HUPD is going to hire 35-40 Cops to the tune of about $1.2 million in salary? This is what the CFO and Trustees are buying off on? Wow! things are going well over there. How many total cops there now? Jeezuz, there will be more guys on a shift than in the Boston PD surrounding Precinct/Area.

Posted by: DUKE1005

From the same source at HUPD, they currently have around 60 Officers!

That's accurate. Where is HUPD451 I believe when you need him?

Posted by: mazz

Harvard is going to be putting on a few very soon. I know several people that are having their backgrounds done.

Posted by: mpd61

Hey Hold on!!!

I have to change my vote to EMERSON College! Check out their "Just for fun" and "Unofficial" part of their website! What a laugh! I'm sure that the Trustees and parents will appreciate how these guys interact with the students while in uniform!
=D>

Posted by: union1

Dude, the whole website is unofficial, you couldnt get that from the web adress being a personal AOL account and the wording saying Evening Shift website? Also, you should know what happens when you "assume". (Since there arent any students here).

Sorry Buddy,

You believe posting pictures on an "unofficial" website in the public domain of the internet, means it lessens the impact on the image of police officers at Emerson?

Oh they weren't students? Sorry, That makes it appropriate then.

Ghee Whiz, I'm sorry. I guess I'll go out after work tonight and hug some chicks in a public parking lot on my POV in official uniform. How could ANYBODY possibly attach ANYTHING negative to either me or my agency?
Guess I better get down of my high horse and live it up a little!

Thanks for straightening me out. What was I thinking?

Do you have a link? I juest went to Emerson's website and couldn't find anything as you described.

Posted by: union1

I took the pictures off because of tightwads like MPD61. They cant just change the channel when they see something they dont like. Make sure you Email him privately to thank him for the removal of such great pictures!

Posted by: hupd451

Sorry guys I have been a little busy. Here is the scoop as far as I know it. They are in the process of hiring 5 police officer, my understanding is that it is minority hires and they are doing the background checks as we speak. This will bring our total of patrol officers to sixty and total dept to about eighty. As most of you probably know that Harvard just purchased 90+ acres from the Pike bring the total to over 200 acres in Allston. Also Harvard purchased the Arsenal in Watertown and will slowly be moving there, they already have occupied some of the property and the parking lots. I know the talk has been to double the size of the dept in the next five years. I think once they start building on the property they will hire more. I will keep you informed, but my advise is to submit your resume' so they have it on file.

Why isn't WENTWORTH on anybodies list?? I'm glad I came over to WENTWORTH. It has a lot to offer. We have backing from our administration and we have a good working relationship with Boston. Our department is growing and I work with a lot of good officers Big city problems lead to a tremendous amount of police experiance

Posted by: topcop

C.Manni, I know the department and I know who you are talking about. I hope you are not stuck on the same shift as s/he. All I can say is watch your back this persons piss poor aditude will bring you down.

Wentworth should have made my list / always had respect for their dept during my years across the street.

fscpd907, How are things at the state college?? I worked there for about five years. Things got pretty bad there for a while. If you want to know where some of the department skeletons are kept let me know. Oh the stories I could tell................ nfire:

Posted by: fscpd907

Mazz

Great group of cops to work with at the State Teachers College. I bet you could tell some great stories if just half of the ones I hear are true. Overall I have enjoyed my two years at fscpd so far. Watch out for the Guys/Gals over at MassArt for me.

4. QCC

6. Becker
7. Holy Cross - should be lower but I ran out of schools

\/ I notice no one said Wellesley College? As of July 1st, $21.50 to start, +9% shift differential (21.50 + 1.93 = $23.43/hr). 4/2 schedule, decent - very good chief depending on source. Armed dept with union representation that gets offered Wellesley details, but most WCPD officers turn them down because their detail rate (somewhere around $34) is less than the OT rate. A job so sought after that they actually have their own test, and had 134 applicants for the last posting of only two positions. Only 15 patrolmen/women, on an all girl campus (probably the only drawback to the job) with little crime.

Do you mean that an all girl campus is a drawback? Uhh, I wouldnt have a problem driving around a campus full of drunk college chicks AND getting paid $21 an hour for it!

Think about this a bit more though. What kinds of calls does an all girl campus generate? What about medical calls? How many "girl fights" have you broken up? Scenery may be better (and that probably sounds more piggish than I meant), but I'd rather be at a co-ed campus any day. Besides, my girlfriend is jealous and accusatory enough as it is.

Maybe not as fast as you TK . Hey how is Framingham State College is it one of the better places to work

Posted by: fscpd808

TB - Framingham State College is a pretty good place to work at, the guys are good, I am finding it to be very quiet during the summer but the students will make up for the quietness when they return. All in all things are pretty good, how is emerson? Other than this web site have you talked to J.D or Bobby? or anyone else?

Posted by: ecpd402

TK Emerson is good. We are located neard the combat zone so we deal with everything all year long. The students almost never give us trouble. I talk to Bobby every week he is always looking for people in my area with outstanding warrants. We also have a good relationship with Suffolk University so I see Marks and Knowles alot.

Posted by: fscpd808

How are Marks and Knwoles, are getting along? So what is the deal with you and the state police are you going to be able to go to the next class?

Posted by: daveh

I guess someone took offense to the "Worst Colleges Post" but the bashing continues on the "Great Colleges Post". I've never seen a hotter topic on the Campus Police forum. I guess some people take offense too easily; my take on it is that it is widely known that campus cops in Ma. are a disgruntled bunch, but we have great reason! If folks are that easily offended - consider another profession, it comes with the territory.

Anyhow, here is a question for ya. Which is more important when seeking employment within a college campus police setting?

1. A pro-active armed department
2. A liberal unarmed department that pays 5 grand more a year.

Well as we all know I'm not disgruntled!!!! Oh yeah that was me that won the salty award for class#11 wasnt it?? Hands down I would chose #1 A pro-active armed department over 5 grand more a year. If I wanted to make alot of money I certianly wouldnt be in this line of work. I think those who are in it for the money are doing it for the wrong reason. This is part of the problem with campus police work and why in some cases we are looked down upon and why some departments arent armed, because of the dumpy officers who are in this for the money and so they can say they are a cop. Just my opinion, agree or disagree but as far as Im concerned if you chose the money over the guns it may be time you look for work in another field.

Oh yeah smatson Eleven does Rock!!!!

Posted by: JohnBarleycorn

Absolutely!!! Pro-Active armed dept. $5000 more a year is only $2.40 more per hour, but my answer (and I think we will see the majority) would still be the same if it was $5 more an hour.

The way people look at you and more importantly, the way you look at yourself is worth taking the pay cut. Being able to do your job and have the tools you should have far outway financial rewards. :P :P

Armed depts retain officers longer and unarmed depts LOSE officers to armed depts (sometimes at reduced hourly rates).

On the other hand, let's keep arming supervisors only and giving salary increases to LT's and Chiefs while we cry poverty to the officers. Yeah, that's how to keep officer morale up.

I'll see your and raise you more

Posted by: Dogger

I hear Lasell College is a good campus to work for. Those guys carry and have at least two new cruisers. They respond to a lot of medicals because of the retirement home on there property and most of the students are females. The pay isn't that great, but they are Middlesex Sheriff's and get details all the time.

Posted by: fscpd907

Dogger

I hear that Lasell is a terrible place to work No dispatcher No station Who thinks that medical calls are fun to go on I hate medical calls. Maybe you should become a firefighter.

SMATSON

Put down another vote for pro-active

#907

Posted by: Nightstick

What good is more money if you're not around to spend it? I work for an armed department and the students hear can't believe that not all campus police are armed. Besides as someone else stated the job is not about the money, it's about loving what you do. I remember back when I was in college the cops were a joke, they didn't carry themselves like cops and took no pride in their appearance. A lot of the Campus Police I work with or interact with do have their acts together and from what I've observed are beginning to make the field more professional.

Posted by: GUNNERYSGTHARTMAN

i heard that Lasell cops get paid like $14 an hour, and have to sit at the front desk of an old age home all night........

And they have a problem attracting some trigger happy people, who get sent back to Brand-x................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...............................................

And they have 4 or 5 cops on the 12-8 shift, and 1 on days??????????
what kind of officer safety is that??????????????????

Sgt. Hartman

Posted by: cjm74

Nightstick,
I couldn't agree w/ u more. I believe that u are a reflection on your department. If some departments can get rid of these useless BOOBS(ie Chiefs, old lazy patrolman etc) they may have a chance of making thier department credible.

Posted by: SSPO#11

I took the pay cut plunge....... 15.55/hr to 12 something. It sucks money wise...but I am WAYYYYY more mentally sain (that's not saying much) working on a decent department. Although we aren't armed we are proactive and we will never be questioned for having to make an arrest.

#11

Posted by: DANIPD

Sgt. Hartman,

I understand that Lasell College does handle lots of medical aid requests, most of which are at the retirement home. As in any retirement home, the heat is on year-round, and the germs are a plenty. It is evident that persons responding to these calls often turn ill themselves...I hear that when the Norwalk virus made its rounds through there it wasn't a pretty picture!

D.K.

Posted by: GUNNERYSGTHARTMAN

Well Dan, the old Sarge has heard a few Lasell rumors to:

1. Everyone carrys a differant gun
2. Black sneakers (dirty) are very popular
3. Only 2 or 3 of the cops have found out about that little secret called dry-cleaning.
4. There is 1 Sgt, who works 4 Days a week, and a LT. who works on sunday.
5. If the guys want to wear a name tag, collar brass, or any other squared away things, they must buy them themselves.
6. The firearms instructor's certification is expired
7. the FTO has never been to a Police Academy

Wow, Looks like I'll have to pay them a visit.

Private Lasell you best un F*#%K yourself, or I will PT you till your eyeballs Bleed!

Posted by: PATS246

Campus PD is great. There are a few good places out there to work, I didn't work at one of them. But seems like most places don't know what they are doing. I dont mean the officers! I mean the Administration.

As for a previous post. Choose the armed/proactive dept over the liberal school with a raise. I worked at the liberal school w/ no gun. You get zero respect, non proactive, and your safety could be in jeopordy not being armed. I'd rather work somewhere where you are happy doing what you are doing. Not misserable everyday when you go into work. I know I was misserable going to work at BrandX everyday.

Posted by: PATS246

My favortie line I used to share with my former fellow campus po's. "These guys want all the guns, police badges, shirts, police stickers, etc., but they don't want to do any police work."

At Brandx for a place that complained about not carrying a firearm... what do they need it for, half the people who I knew when I worked there didn't want to be involved with anything remotely related to police work. The gun holster might be uncomfortable when they are laying down watching TV all night

Posted by: eglock72

Amen brother GDP11

BRAND-X is its own worst enemy, especially the"Braking Crab and Ginzo." Way back when I can remember that everytime they would bitch about having "real cops" for a metal detector function they would cry fowl. But when anyone would try to do something they would not lift a finger. And if some new guy who has to wait to goto the academy said something to help improve the job he would be yelled at from the chief and the union would distance themselves from one of there own memebers.

In order to have that place become even close to an all right place to work they need to get rid of the dead wood(almost everyone there) to make it great.

Posted by: cjm74

Now u all know how I feel about that place. I want to so bad throw more shots at that three ring circus over there, but I'm not going to waste my time. The directors ears will bleed!! Can't agree with u guys more. Don't bitch about a place if your not going to even try and make changes.

Posted by: LeadDog17

CJM,
Thanks for holding back on the Brandeis shots!

The rest of us,
This thread is quickly straying into "worst campus" territory. Let's try to get back on topic or the door is going to slam shut.

Allow me to help. I have heard some great things about MIT and Col. DiFava. Anyone have stuff to share on that or other great departments around Boston/Cambridge?

-Eric

Posted by: ecpd402

I have run into some of the MIT guys they say nothing but good things about the MIT police. They also post their police logs on their webpage so you can see the activity they get during their shifts

Posted by: fscpd907

Can't say enough good things about MIT great pay and all the tools to do the job. HUPD, MIT, BCPD, BUPD and Northeastern are all among the best colleges to work for in Massachusetts.

MIT and BU are the way to go.

Another good college to work for is Wentworth. It is a good stepping stone. Armed PD, new cruisers, and you work with HUPD and Northeastern. Pay is not bad and good group of people.

Worst college to work for is Merrimack, do I need to explain. :P

Pardon me, there Gunnery Sergeant Numnutz. Please enlighten us fine Campus Police Officers where you work. You seem to know a lot about the field. Do you work mall security somewhere? I am sure that you could start a topic on mall security couldn't you? Why don't you stay on the topic of Great Campuses to Work for? I would say go to Brandeis, but from what I hear, you wouldn't cut it there.
P.S. How do you spell S-P-E-L-L-C-H-E-C-K? Must not have learned that skill down there at old Paris Island did you?
