New Orleans Police Department officials are teaming up with the FBI to combat violent crime in the Crescent City. U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said the FBI will take cases from NOPD where a federal-level crime can be proven. Since the Federal Violent Crime Task Force began working with NOPD there have been 46 arrests of violent offenders and 35 indictments within two months. Officials for NOPD said it is putting together targeting packages on the city's most violent criminals to facilitate the cases now being handled by the FBI. "It will, at some point down the road, make a difference," said New Orleans Police Chief Warren Riley. "We are making a small difference now but there is a tremendous road ahead." Federal agents also said citizen cooperation has also led to raids on crack houses operating in Uptown thanks to a new tool in the federal fight against crime. The FBI has instituted a card program where citizens can give the FBI anonymous tips. City prosecutors said that all of the suspects arrested through the new partnership remain in jail and off streets, but federal officials said they will not get comfortable with that fact. "We're not going to be declaring victory when we've got a week or two lull, because there're going be spikes and there're going be tough weekends like this," said Letten. "We have to set up a deterrent but it's up to the local enforcement entity and the courts to do their job as well."
