Cop takes on two unruly individuals

Take a look at this video of an officer making a MV stop and encountering two unruly individuals. Would you have handled it the same. If not what would you have done different.

I would have detained the first suspect in the back of the cruiser then delt with the 2nd but this officer showed great restraint and discipline but he had to get physical inorder to gain control. but when the suspect reached in the trunk for a "weapon" i would of tackled him.. he could have ben getting a gun.

And they were prolly illegals, How dare you harass us while we break the law?

I bet if Deville saw that he would have given them a pardon then a drivers license and college education

and bought them a caddy and gave them a nice set up drape, then hired them their own illegal to work as their personal assistant.

That was a suck situation that cop was in. O/C spray may have shut them up. But it looked like it could have been windy out. The crazy thing was is it didnt even bother them when he pulled his weapon, they were still running thier mouths. Does anyone know if they had anything in the car or warrents for them to act so stupid.

Too quick to pull out the cuffs.... Not good when they start to fight and your juggling your cuffs. I always wait and see if they are compliant and put their hands behind their back when told to do so, then i grab both their index fingers and give a good squeeze, THEN i pull out the cuffs once i have control of their hands. A Taser would have been pretty effective here too...

So he could've been getting a gun and you'd have tackled him? Ummm?

Youre out numbered by subjects who obviously have no aversion to becoming violent with a police officer, you deploy baton, and he one-ups you with a large shovel. If (not that it necessarily was here) that shovel is raised in an obvious attempt to strike me (which could easily render you unconscious and thus unable to retain your weapon or defend yourself) Guess what...it just became a very bad day for him...

However, I agree that a taser would have been ideal here...

Those two men were completely out of line. That was just stupid to grab that shovel out of the truck though. The officer really did do a great job.. wish someone had offered to help him sooner (If there was even traffic!)

O.C. Spray would have come out after the first time I told him not to touch me, and he would have gotten sprayed the second time he did. They were both way too close and aggressive with no backup in sight.

The minute the shovel came out and not immediately dropped on command the cop should have dropped the asshole. If fucko #2 didn't comply, buh-bye to him too.

I'm telling you, now that we have tazers, I can't see living without them. Any non-compliance, and they get zapped. In this situation though, it's hard...you don't have two tazers for two people...1 tazer and you hope to God the other complies. The officer did the best he could in the situation.

I think he got sucked into a verbal pissing contest with them, he didn't have to refute each and every assinine statement they made ...he looked a bit flustered before it got physical.

I have seen this video before. It was actually shown at in-service. It illustrates the threat perception pretty well. Such as maintaining distance, escalation from open hand tactics, to baton to fire arm. However, what the video on youtube didnt show is that the officer asked the two mexicans about 30 times to get out of the car before he took action.

Once they became uncooperative he should have requested back up, and re approached upon the arrival of the back up. Somtimes we push the envelope a bit too far in handeling things alone. I have done it as I am sure you all have. Second you never have one spread eagle with the other standing next to him, they know what they have and dont have, if they have something and they know you will find it, they will hurt you and you wont see it coming. Control one by placing him in the back of the cruiser and then pat frisk the other. Third never advertise that they are under arrest, specialy if you know you are going to have a problem, you can always explain after they are sitting in the car in handcuffs. Fourth if they both took blows at you, you are more than justified in drawing your weapon an holding them at bay until help arrives. Attacking you while you are holding them at bay a cap will be distributed... be ready to justify it later on paper. Oviously if they get in the car, I would give chase rather than shoot, unless shot upon. Ofcourse all this is easy sitting here at the computer... doing it live is a different story, therefore I respect what this officer did, I believe his actions were the best actions he saw in response to a fluid and ever changing situation. I am sure he will learn from it and adjust accordingly. Stay Safe

Yeah, but do we know how close back-up was? It's hard to say that in a situation like this. And depending on the agency (say it's a state agency) maybe he wouldn't call the locals to help. I think it's bad practice, but I've seen it happen before. A CSP trooper got his ass kicked a few years back because he didn't want to call a local agency for back-up, decided to wait 45minutes for his trooper buddy...Sometimes you gotta ask for anyone you can.

Posted by: spdawg0734

I am sure that CSP Trooper wont do that again. There is no room in this job for petiness, specialy when critical situations arise. In the past I have rolled around in the ground alone and was very glad to receive if only minimal assist from a civilian. The important thing is to win the battle and go home at the end of the shift. Stay Safe
