Sheriff will be no joke at Boston breakfast

WORCESTER— He got banned in Boston, but he hasn’t been banished in his hometown.

Yet.

Worcester County Sheriff Guy W. Glodis, whose cringe-worthy skewering of powerful Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino at last year’s St. Patrick’s Day political roast in South Boston got him un-invited from the legendary event this year, will take the dais at Worcester’s counterpart breakfast Sunday along with a host of other local politicians.

The sheriff’s aides didn’t get far when they offered their services as joke-writers for his performance at Worcester’s St. Patrick’s event at the Elk’s Lodge on Mill Street, where former state Rep. James B. Leary of Worcester, chief of staff for Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray, will be roasted.

“Guy is for the most part writing his own material,” said sheriff spokesman Keith Mitchell.

If the good sheriff’s wince-inducing performance last March — which rattled Mr. Menino and produced a backlash of anti-Glodis comments from the mayor’s aides —was any indication, that could be trouble.

Then again, part of the fun at these political roasts is the always-present potential for speakers to veer out of control, said Don Wentworth, co-chairman of the breakfast.

That happened in 1998, when Lois Pines, then a candidate for attorney general, so turned off the audience with what was perceived as an overly harsh roasting of her competitor for the Democratic nomination, Thomas F. Reilly, that some political observers thought it led to her eventual defeat in the primary.

Another speaker who fell flat was U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry, who did not click when he appeared in 1996 with his then opponent for his Senate seat, former Gov. William F. Weld, one of the few Republicans who has prospered at the Worcester breakfast.
Mr. Leary, a student of political history, knows about all that. He could be banking on it, in fact.

“There’s tremendous potential for each and every one of them to bomb,” the lieutenant governor’s trusted confidant said. “Even with Tim, he’s not a guy who cares about titles like “mayor” or “lieutenant governor” – as long as I stand and salute whenever he comes in the room.”

For his part, Sheriff Glodis sparked nervous chuckles and glowering looks from Mr. Menino when he suggested in Boston last year that he was on medication and called him “the best mayor money can buy.”

This year’s roast in Worcester, which will be the 14th time the event has been staged here, could have its own share of edginess with the participation of Mayor Konstantina B. Lukes, a longtime sworn political enemy of Mr. Murray, and, by extension, Mr. Leary.

Mr. Murray, by the way, will be in attendance at the 8:30 a.m., $20-a-head breakfast, which benefits the Worcester school district’s Community Schools program. He’ll have in tow the governor’s councilor from Boston, Michael Callahan.

Another possible target for barbs could be the master of ceremonies, Rep. Robert P. Spellane, D-Worcester, who earlier this month was penalized $10,000 for violating state campaign finance laws.

Other roasters include U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern, Worcester Deputy School Superintendent Stephen E. Mills and restaurateur Brendan O’Connor.

Mr. Wentworth, the breakfast organizer, said he’s eager to see how Sheriff Glodis will go over.

“He has not been banned from Worcester,” he said. “We could not do that to him.”

He should use your line, then at least one of his jokes would be funny.
