Victim Molested 50 Times Over 2 Years

BOSTON -- A Beverly, Mass., mother who prostituted her 8-year-old daughter to a man in exchange for crack cocaine was sentenced Friday to 15 to 18 years in state prison.
Mary Jean Armstrong, 38, was charged with seven counts each of child rape and indecent assault and battery, two counts of inducting a minor into prostitution and other child abuse charges.
Police began investigating in 2004 after a rapist, Richard Lapham, showed photographs of him raping the victim to an acquaintance who later stole those photos and handed them over to police. Lapham is now serving a 15- to 18-year prison sentence.

When investigators searched Lapham's apartment, they walked in on Lapham molesting the child. Armstong was in another room with her 12-year-old son, high on cocaine and pain killers.
"She is changed forever," prosecutor Elizabeth Dunigan said. "We will never know the woman she could have been."
Armstong later told police that her daughter had been molested as many as 50 times in a two-year period, sometimes in Lapham's apartment and sometimes in Armstrong's residence in Beverly.
Defense attorney William Martin asked Superior Court Judge Leila Kern to impose a more lenient sentence on Armstrong because she has a low IQ and suffered child molestation herself, he said. He blamed Lapham for the abuse.
"This idea came from him," Martin said. "He was the ringmaster in this terrible, sick drama."
Another defendant, Patrick Doyle, was sentenced last month to a year in jail for being present in Armstrong's apartment while her daughter was being raped but doing nothing to stop the crime. He later threatened a witness.
The final defendant in the case, Robert L'Italien, is scheduled to plead guilty on March 19.
