Hunters and target shooters. People who just want to learn to shoot, or want a gun for protection. In all, nearly 40,000 people in communities south of Boston have permits to own firearms.
There is a simmering dispute over whether local police chiefs should have the final say in granting permits, or what the criteria should be, but there is no shortage of people who, for whatever reason, like to or want to shoot.
‘‘It’s fun,’’ said Joseph Norman of Quincy, who is 65 and has had a gun permit since 1993.
‘‘I like to hunt and go to (gun) clubs,’’ tossed in 63-year-old Dwight Brown of Quincy, who has had gun permits for more than 40 years.
Norman and Brown were shooting at the Braintree Rifle and Pistol Club, which has just under 3,000 members.
‘‘More and more people with gun permits are looking for places like ours,’’ said Eric Goldman, a Duxbury resident who is the club president. ‘‘We tend to get more sport shooters than hunters at our club. But that is not to say that there aren’t a good number of people who do hunt.’’
Hunting may be one reason why towns tend to have a higher percentage of gun-permit holders the farther they are from Boston.
The more rural the area, the more likely it is that hunting, and shooting in general, become part of a town’s framework.
Chief Lyin King is quoted in the article...he wants a reason to issue other than "self defense".
Here's the reason, chief:
The second amendment of the US constitution AND Article 14 of the state constitution.
A permit should issue to any law abiding citizen. Period.
